This was possibly my favorite
system in the history of gaming... but I never played it.
Why, you ask? Well, finding
the system manuals even at the peak of popularity for
this system was damn near impossible. And besides, I had the hack
fiction. Seriously,
the books in this world were far better than any D&D hack fiction
prior or post and
better than most 'high' fanstasy and sci-fi.
It is by far the grimmest system ever designed by TSR.
Athas is a blasted desert world
ruled by cruel sorcerer-kings and their crueler templars. The natural
resources have
been drained or destroyed and magic is illegal. Most people live in
poverty, relying
on shady thieves and assassins for even the most basic of foodstuffs.
There is a story that says
Athas was once a verdant and beautiful land filled with an
abundance of living things. A few fringe factions are working to restore
what they
hope is not a silly myth. Everyone else is concerned with just surviving.
